Keeping Pets Protected From Preventable Illness

Vaccinations play a vital role in lifelong pet health. They help safeguard dogs and cats from serious, potentially life-threatening diseases—some of which can also pose risks to people, including rabies and leptospirosis. At Beachwood Animal Clinic, we focus on providing timely, appropriate vaccines to support your pet’s health at every life stage, using protocols that are both safe and effective.

When Should Pets Receive Vaccines?

Young pets need early protection while their immune systems are still developing. Puppies and kittens typically begin their vaccine series around 6 to 8 weeks of age, followed by boosters every few weeks until they reach about 16 weeks old. This schedule helps build strong immunity during a critical growth period.

Adult pets continue to need protection as well. Depending on the vaccine and your pet’s lifestyle, boosters may be recommended yearly or every three years. Our veterinarians take the time to evaluate your pet’s age, health history, and daily activities to design a vaccination schedule that fits their individual needs.

Which Vaccines Are Recommended?

Beachwood Animal Clinic offers both core and lifestyle-based vaccines for dogs and cats. Recommendations are customized, but commonly include:

  • For dogs: Rabies, distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, and canine influenza
  • For cats: Rabies, feline distemper (panleukopenia), calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and feline leukemia (FeLV)

During your visit, we’ll discuss which vaccines are most appropriate based on factors such as exposure risk, environment, boarding or grooming needs, and travel habits.

Are Pet Vaccinations Safe?

Vaccines have an excellent safety record. While mild side effects—such as temporary soreness or low energy—can occasionally occur, more serious reactions are uncommon. Our team monitors your pet closely and is always happy to answer questions or address concerns. The protection vaccines provide against severe disease far outweighs the small risk of side effects.
